The place to go to pout about the universe in a rational way. No intelligence required.

So, I finally had the time to realize the demo came out for Demigod, and I was very impressed. It runs great on my 1.76Ghz dual core laptop, and it's tons of fun. I would already own it, but I have a coupon for Best Buy.

The demo is limited, but it allows someone to really get a feel for the game. The full version promises 5vs5 combat, but 3vs3 is enough to show you how much fun a multiplayer game like this can be. The team-oriented combat really makes you feel involved in something strategical and big. Only 4 demigods are available in the demo, but all four seemed expertly balanced. The games are short enough not to be too long to do in one sitting, but they are long enough that you could put one on a schedule (about 1 hour). Perfect.

Personally, I kinda wish some of the autonomous soldiers would mirror the actions of a general's elite troops, since you currently have no control over where they go or what they attack. But it works the way it is, and the autonomous troops have a great AI. Better, I would think, than some players might use them. So that could be a double-edged sword.

Overall, it's one of the best games out there, and probably the only great game out there that will run fine on my laptop.

edit: Ghz, not Mhz. Soon to be Thz.

Now that is impressive.

Just to note, normal matches are usually 3v3.

I'm a demo convert as well, haven't tried the game until that came out. I ordered it the same day as I found it really catchy and.. digestible, is a word that springs to mind.

I didn't feel the demo was limited at all. The matches you play in the demo are identical (or so I assume, anyway) to the same setups should you have the full version, just in terms of no artificial level caps or disabled features. You can even unlock favour items.

I don't mind the current reinforcement behaviour. The only thing that's important is that it's consistent and predictable (ie. the lane behaviour they do now) rather than sketchy and even random, making it almost luck based.

"1.76Mhz

Yeah, baby. I've overclocked the crap out of it.

Ha, I didn't notice that.

Same here, I didn't buy it at first after all that news about the connection problems, for those outside of the USA. But I tried the demo and it is so awesome. Hell I don't have the fastest connection but I was able to play multiple games and had a tiny ping value (though a number of people i played with kept getting dropped). So I decided to get it. I bought it from amazon as it is slightly cheaper than from impulse. And should be getting it just before my birthday (on the 8th). So at least I'll have something to tide me over while I wait for the Elemental beta in September.

I just love that walking castle thing!! To play as that alone is probably worth the money.

I didn't know they made duel-cores that slow.  I mean, my 2nd PC was something like 90Mhz, and that one is only 1.76Mhz.   1.76Ghz would be expected, but 1.76Mhz?   duel-core or not, that wouldn't even run Win 95.

(for the recond, I don't know the specs on my 1st PC.   the 90Mhz one ran Win95, but the one that I remember before that ran dos and later win 3.1.  I have no idea what was 'under the hood' on that one)

(its not as funny now that I realized the OP responded already)

Hearing about the demo featuring 4 demigods makes me very excited for the next two available.  I think I could have plenty of fun with only the 4 demigods, since that is half the number available in the retail version.   But once the retail version gets 10 or 12 demigods, it will start to really make users desire the retail I think.

The main question I have is:   Is it really helping boost sales after the shaky launch?

Yeah yeah. It was a typo. It's a 1.73Ghz dual core. So I actually made 2 mistakes there.

I wanted the retail because I'm going to make multiplayer spawns with my suitmates and run LAN party action. Plus, the skill matching system online, twice as many demigods, more arenas, etc. The demo is fine if you can't afford the full or you don't buy games, but honestly, it's $40, which I could manage even as a college student on a TA salary.

I was impressed by the demo as well and will be buying the retail game as soon as the 1.2 patch comes out (hopefully with the 2 new demigods).  I found the gameplay pretty easy to pick up--I'm a fan of both RTS and RPG games.  There is a good amount of customization options for each demigod, and I really look forward to playing the others.

I was expecting awful AI based on everything that I have read at these forums, but I was pleasantly surprised.  While an AI-controlled demigod would occasionally do something dense, for the most part they played well.  They didn't (usually) chase me into my towers, they upgraded themselves and their citadel, and they used their special powers to good effect.  However, it seems that Rook died an awful lot, I suppose due to his size and slowness.  I played on couple of games online: one lagged like hell and the other was just fine.  The teams were mixed with real players and AI players.  It was hard to tell which demigods were human controlled (which might not be saying much considering that the human players were noobs ).  Still, I think that it is very likely that the developers have paid some attention to the AI as of late.

I really do hope that this game gets more content, even an expansion with new demigods and maps.  It would be nice if the modders and GPG/Stardock started working on additinal content.  The game has a great deal of potential and is quite fun.

Update: the game runs slowly online with my laptop, but it runs fine on my $500 desktop. Also, the online servers are full of people who have really fast, expensive computers and bad attitudes. They really showed me that they were white collar professionals rather than people who work for a living (I mean that literally, although it's a bigoted assumption) when I tested it on my laptop through a wireless router.

Ah well, it'll work on my destop for internet games.

edit: No, for some reason the sound was taking a lot more processor in the retail. I had to turn it down. It runs fine on the laptop.

It's unfair to assume that they are white collar only. The main issue is that people join with poor spec boxes and lag the game due to low sim speed. They either need to a) turn down settings, play smaller games or c) get a better machine as the game is ruined for everyone else... I regularly get booted from US games for my ping (due to being in Australia) yet often it is the US guys with crappy PCs that cause more issues...

Glad to hear there are new players. Hope you have fun and enjoy your stay

I'm sure we'll receive some updated information from Frogboy in his next Journal entry as to how the Demo has improved things. I know of at least 7 people who have purchased the game thanks to having tried the game via the Demo, so I think it's doing very well and helping to alleviate people's fears about the launch pains.

"It's unfair to assume that they are white collar only."

Totally. And trust me, I'm a total hypocrite. But for some unknown and unusual reason, I like to say these things when no one knows me, or to myself. Maybe there is some evolutionary explanation, since environmental would be a paradox. Or maybe I just like what's taboo. But I am digressing.

I am having a little trouble with the internet skirmish feature. Is anyone else encountering this? I can see that there are plenty of open games when I check custom, yet the finder won't locate one.

I believe there is a glitch where it currently reports no people are waiting, despite there being many. If you wait, it will eventually link you up. This is a known issue, I assume it's being corrected in the next patch.

Well, if were picking on obvious typos, what exactly is a duel-core? A bunch of cores dueling in your computer, and the one that loses has to execute the code?

On topic, i tried the demo, but it failed to convice me to buy the game. I'll still hang around for the Sins expansions, and possibly Elemental
